Knitwear is at the heart of every Marc Cain collection. Extraordinary patterns, innovative knitting methods and outstanding finishes show how much expertise and craftsmanship go into every item. Production on a larger scale only became possible with the introduction of electronically controlled knitting machines in the 1970s. A lot has happened since then.

In our ultra-modern production facilities, which cover an area of 2,000 square metres, we produce around 390,000 knitted items per year on a total of 119 knitting machines - an impressive capacity of around 1.5 million knitted items per year. We use 112 flat knitting machines and 7 circular knitting machines. Our production runs on working days in the now rare, efficient 24-hour operation with three shifts.

All the Marc Cain collections are produced at the company headquarters in Bodelshausen. The state of the art includes exclusive production techniques, special prints and high-quality standards. A dedicated development department works continuously on new processes and makes the brand’s highly specialised knitwear expertise possible in the first place.

Programmers and engineers have invested countless hours in researching and developing the technology. The result is unique in the industry: the machines are able to autonomously identify knots in the yarn, untangle them, and resume the procedure without stopping. The machines can even produce different types of knit, ranging from smooth or ribbed knit to cable knit and jacquard.

Quality starts at procurement. Marc Cain sources almost all its fabrics, yarns and jersey materials from Europe, predominantly from Italy. Once a fabric has been picked out by designers, it is sewn into a sample piece to see how it drapes. Next, criteria such as care properties, abrasion resistance and pilling behaviour are tested. Once all the tests are complete, the designers start designing. A quality check comprises a phenomenal 31,000 steps every season: a vast figure that shows how much attention to detail goes into every collection.

The German production site makes these rigorous quality standards possible in the first place. That’s because all the processes – from design to development to production – take place under one roof. Marc Cain even creates its own exclusive yarns in its own winding and twisting mill, making its knitwear models even more unique.

HIGHEST QUALITY STANDARDS

After textile production, it’s time for finishing. Every Marc Cain item undergoes a specially tailored finishing programme, with steps including steaming or ironing. Steaming and ironing helps items retain their shape, while drying ensures fullness, density and elasticity. Finishing processes like these help achieve certain visual and haptic effects, as well as improved quality and material properties. Manual processes take precedence, so much so that every item is handled up to 90 times and inspected many times over. Only by doing so is it possible to ensure consistent quality standards, and it is precisely this production expertise that makes Marc Cain so unique.

In every collection, there is a special focus on the charismatic prints that are typical of Marc Cain. Here too, the company has forged its own path: Marc Cain has been ordering custom-produced ink use since 2007. Exclusive printing processes also guarantee unrivalled colourfastness and brilliance. During the inkjet printing process, the ink is applied to the fabric by a nozzle, where it permanently bonds to the fibre. Thanks to this indelible colouring method, the prints can neither crack nor break. It is even possible to print 360-degree motifs on knitwear.
