Melitta Bentz created the first coffee filter from
blotting paper and a metal tin. She filed a patent for
her invention in 1908.
The Hungarian-American
biophysicist and inventor Mária Telkes (1900–1995)
was known as the “Sun Queen” for her work on solar
energy technologies. Together with the architect
Eleanor Raymond, she designed the Dover Sun House
in 1948. It is considered the first house in the world to
be heated with solar energy.
In 2021, 15-year-old
Reshma Kosaraju from the US won a climate prize for
her AI-controlled model project which can predict
forest fires with almost 90% accuracy.
The basis for
wireless data communication and thus for Wi-Fi,
GPS and Bluetooth was created by Vienna-born
Hedy Lamarr (1914–2000). She invented frequency
hopping in the 1940s.
